MEXBRO’ RAILWAY SERVANTS AND THE HOSPITAL MOVEMENTS
A meeting of the men employed on the Manchester, Sheffield,
and Lincolnshire railway was held at Mexbro’ Passenger Station yesterday, to
consider the question of supporting the Montagu Cottage Hospital lately
established in Mexbro’. The meeting, which was fairly attended, represented
nearly all the various departments, and Mr. J. E. Frost, station master, was
appointed to the chair, and in stating the object for which the meeting was
called, pointed out the advantage of such an institution. After some discussion
it was unanimously agreed to make two collections yearly in support of the
hospital, viz., one in the first week of June and the other in the first week
in December each year. To make arrangements for carrying out these, the
following were appointed a committee :- For the traffic departments, Messers.
Eckford and Boyes; for the locomotive department, Messers. Oliver and Sargent;
for shopmen, Mr. C. Helson; for goods department, Mr. J. Fisher; for signal
department, Mr. Urin; and for the platelayers, Mr. Wortley, together with Mr. Frost, the
chairman, and Mr. W. Shenton, who was appointed secretary, consisting of Mr.
H.E. Liversidge (chairman), Mr.John Clark(hon.sec), Mr. Darwent, and Mr.
Marshall. Mr. Liversidge, in explaining the objects and working of the
institution, strongly urged its claims and asked them to give it their most
hearty support. The Secretary of the hospital gave particulars of what had
been, and was being done by the workmen and employers at other places in and
around Mexbro’, and a strong hope was expressed that, considering the
importance of Mexbro’ as a railway centre, the directors of the Manchester,
Sheffield, and Lincolnshire railway Company might see their way to give the
hospital some substantial recognition.
